Ordained as an elder in 1968, he received a B.S. degree from Troy University, a M. Div. degree from Candler School of Theology in Atlanta, and a D. Min. degree from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. For six years he served as superintendent of the Pensacola District of The Alabama-West Florida Conference.
